Block of the Month Block of the Month Archives
2024-2025
The idea behind monthly blocks is to sew/learn a different technique, become a more experienced quilter, without committing to making a whole quilt. At each month's guild meeting one or more samples of that Block of the Month (BOM) will be on display. Instructions are posted on this page shortly after the guild meeting. You can make one or more blocks. All members are encouraged to participate.
Bring your completed block(s) to the next meeting. The blocks will be on display and everyone who brought in a block will be entered in a draw to win the blocks. If you bring in more than one block your name will be entered multiple times in the draw - one entry for each block. The winner can either choose to keep the blocks to make a quilt, or they can donate them to our Charity initiatives.
In the past the Blocks of the Month activity has been led by one or two people. This year different guild members will sign up for a particular month's block. That volunteer will choose a block, prepare the sample or samples, introduce the block at the meeting and explain how it is created. The volunteer will also provide the pattern, which can be a link to a website, or in any other electronic form.

This month there are two blocks, using two very different methods, with helpful tutorials. Hope you have fun trying something new, using fall colours.
This month there are two blocks, using two very different methods, with helpful tutorials. Hope you have fun trying something new, using fall colours.
The first block is called Square in a Square by Fabric 406, the block tutorial can be found at www.fabric406.com I chose to make a 9 inch unfinished block, to match my block in a block so I used their math and cut my first square out at 9 inches and my other 4 squares out at 4.75 or 4 and 3/4".
This method also gives you 4 bonus half-square triangles (HSTs)! |
The second block is called Block in a Block by Planted Seed Designs, can be found at Plantedseeddesigns.com This starts out as a 10" block and after sewing it, it becomes a 9" unfinished block.

Do you like to try a new quilt blocks without committing to an entire project with that block? Then Block of the Month is for you!
This year, since we cannot get physically together, the program committee would like to offer the BLOCK OF THE MONTH as a “Mystery Quilt”. Each month you will receive the instructions for one block. Towards the end of the guild year, you will receive suggestions on how to join all the blocks together to make a 33’ x 46 ½ ‘ wall hanging. Of course, you can add extra borders/wider borders to turn it into a lap quilt.
Materials Needed
Border:
(The material requirements are for the wall hanging…additional border fabric will be required for a larger quilt.)
